My Favorite Super Foods
There are so many top 10 lists of “the healthiest foods ever” floating around out there, but it’s really about what works well for your unique body and mind. Be adventurous and try new things, but don’t suffer through a meal that you hate just because it’s on someone else’s “healthiest foods known to man list”. Here is my personal list of Super Foods.
Wild Salmon
High in Omega 3’s and protein, and low in environmental contaminants. There are probably hundreds of ways to cook it; I prefer it with olive oil and lemon… absolutely delicious.
Spinach
You’ll have to Google this one, cause I can’t fit all of its amazing properties into just a few lines!
Cauliflower
Beautiful and versatile, cauliflower actually comes in various shades of green, orange, purple and white. Low in fat and high in fiber and phytochemicals, this detoxifying veggie can stand in for mashed potatoes or heavy creams in soups and sauces.
Summer Squash
This family of squash includes zucchini, yellow crookneck and straightneck squash, and pattypan. Rich in vitamins and minerals but very low in calories, these veggies are perfect for dieters!
Spaghetti Squash
I absolutely love Spaghetti Squash! You can literally use it as a pasta substitute, meatballs, marinara and all! It’s a good source of fiber and lots of vitamins too!
Sweet Potatoes
Full of flavor and color, sweet potatoes stabilize blood sugar levels having an antidiabetic effect. They contain lots of unique proteins and antioxidants and are also an anti-inflammatory food. One of my favorite meals is a grilled sweet potato and spinach omelet with goat cheese and herbs… yum.
Honey
Honey, made from plant nectar and special “bee enzymes”, has different flavors and colors because bees in various regions collect nectar from indigenous plants. Honey has antimicrobial properties and antioxidant vitamins, minerals and amino acids that table sugar lacks. Honey is also wonderful for your skin; you can use it as a cleanser or moisturizing mask.
Stevia
A calorie free, herbal dietary supplement that is often used as a sugar substitute. Google it to learn more, because there is a wealth of information out there about Stevia. It has a slightly licoricy flavor that can take some getting used to; it comes in powder or liquid form. I like the SweetLeaf brand because they offer it in fun flavors like Valencia Orange and Vanilla Crème.
Ginger
An incredible digestive aid, ginger will relive the worst tummy aches, motion sickness, and even headaches. Ginger is spicy and flavorful; drink ginger infused hot water as a tea, eat it raw or candied, or use it in cooking!
Garlic
Antifungal, antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, and delicious! I put garlic in almost everything I cook (even though it keeps well, the fresher the better)!
Chick Peas (aka Garbanzo Beans)
I put chick peas on salads, make homemade hummus, and use chickpea flour to make grain free stove top bread (so delicious). They’re high in fiber, protein and manganese.
Lentils
Rich in iron with an earthy flavor, lentils are famous for their high fiber content. They also have a nice balance of proteins and carbohydrates.
Almonds
One of the most perfectly balanced foods out there. Almonds are packed with heart healthy, blood sugar stabilizing antioxidants, healthy fats, balanced proteins and complex carbohydrates. They’re high in calories, so you only need a handful or two to give you lasting energy!
Apples
A classic… fiber, vitamins, low calorie content… just good, wholesome fun for the whole body!
Berries
Each variety of berry has its own distinct array of nutritional properties, but all of them are amazingly beneficial. Make them into a beautiful dessert parfait with honey or agave sweetened yogurt.
Whole Milk or Goats Milk Yogurt
I eat a cup of goat’s milk yoghurt every day. It’s a great source of protein, live cultures (good bacteria), calcium, phosphorus, potassium and riboflavin. Goat’s milk can typically be used by people who react badly to cow’s milk!
Lemons
Purifying, immune boosting and refreshing. Squeeze in some fresh lemon every time you drink a glass of water.
Avocado
This “fatty” fruit promotes good cholesterol balance and moisturizes your body from the inside out. It’s amazing ability to help you better absorb nutrients from other foods makes it a perfect addition to any meal (don’t feed it to your puppy though… it can be toxic to animals!)
Quinoa
This is an exceptional whole grain. High in protein, fiber and essential amino acids, but completely gluten free!
Olive Oil
I could go on and on about olive oil. It’s truly amazing. I fact, you’d better Google it to get the full amount of information available.
Herbal Green Tea Mélange
Low in caffeine content, but high in antioxidant power. Combined with healing herbs, the relaxing effects of green tea are even more powerful.
